Breast Implants: Why?
According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation procedures are the top cosmetic surgeries in the world. Not surprisingly, America accounted for 15% of all breast-related procedures in 2013. Speculative opinions may lead you to believe that women who seek breast augmentation are simply seeking more “attention,” but that’s certainly not the lone motivational factor. While the procedures seems to continue to carry a sense of stigma, there are many reasons why some women get breast implants.
For example, after pregnancy (due to weight loss and breast feeding) breast tissues can deplete greatly. Whether the breasts just lack the perkiness they once had or they’ve taken on entirely new shapes, implants can give a little lift and contour to “the girls” that have served well, but look worse for wear. Implants can provide the same enhancements for women whose breasts became smaller after extreme weight loss, or for those who’ve always had one breast larger or shaped differently than the other.
Most breast augmentation surgeries are performed as subtle changes, like a B to a C cup. Some, however, can be more metamorphic. Diseases such as cancer can be treacherous for breasts, but the good news is that mastectomies can help save lives. The bad news? Losing a breast is literally losing a part of yourself, an aspect of your identity. Luckily, in some cases, breast implants can virtually reverse the damage done by aggressive diseases and disorders.
It’s safe to say: Women simply want to feel better about themselves. After all, who doesn’t love to feel beautiful naked? A fuller figure can mean feeling confident when shopping for clothes which require less tailoring or feeling like a goddess in front of the mirror in nothing but lingerie. We all want to take care of (and treat) ourselves in the best ways we know how – no matter if it’s makeup, a new hair style, a manicure, new clothes, a hot bath, a pint of ice cream, or a boob job.
For as many women as there are having breast implant surgeries, there are probably just as many reasons. Motivation can come from anywhere and it will change from person to person. Either way, it should all be about the power of breasts! Women working together can help shed the stigma and help others love their bodies as much as they should: 100%.
